Tax Marital Status Defaulting to R-Non resident alien





Description of Issue

New employees tax marital status is defined as R-non resident alien in Employee Deductions, not reflecting their actual marital status.

Cause
  • The tax marital status was defined as Unreported in Employee Master.

  • When adding the base pay record in Employee Job/Salary, the Marital Status pulls into Federal and State withholding as R-Non Resident Alien.

  • User did not update these fields with corrected marital status information. 



Resolution

Prior to adding Job/Salary records for new employees, make sure the Tax Marital Status is defined correctly in Employee Master Program.

  1. Go to Employee Master (Payroll>Employee Maintenance>Employee Master)

  2. Search for the employee. Click the Demographics tab. Note the Actual Marital Status field. 

To correct Marital Status in Employee Deductions:

  1. Go to Employee Deductions (Payroll>Employee Maintenance>Employee Deductions)

  2. Search for the employee and deduction code. Click Update. 

  3. Define correct Marital Status.
