How to Change Where Your Browser Downloads Files





Description of Issue

The default download location for a web browser needs to be changed, or the browser needs to prompt for the download location.



Context
  • Chrome

  • Firefox

  • Edge

  • Internet Explorer



Cause

Browser settings need to be adjusted



Resolution

If using Chrome:

  1. Click on the three dots to the right of the address bar to open the menu

  2. Select Settings

  3. On the right hand menu select Advanced and then Downloads

  4. Either click Change to define the default download location, or toggle the setting for Ask where to save each file before downloading

If using Firefox:

  1. Click the menu button to the right of the address bar to open the menu

  2. Select Settings

  3. Scroll down to the Files and Applications section

  4. Either click Browse to define the default download location, or select the radio button to Always ask you where to save files

If using Edge:

  1. Click on the three dots to the right of the address bar to open the menu

  2. Select Settings

  3. Select Downloads on the right hand menu

  4. Either select Change to define the default download location, or toggle the setting for Ask me what to do with each download. 

    1. The browser will prompt you to either Open the file without saving, or Save as to allow you to define where you want the file saved

If using Internet Explorer:

The browser should already prompt for a save location when downloading a file, however you can change the default download location by doing the following:

  1. Select the gear icon to the right of the address bar to open the Tools menu

  2. Select View Downloads

  3. Select Options on the bottom left of the window

  4. Select Browse to define the default download location
